Coating Thickness Gauge (For Nickle, NiFe-50) ElektrophysikMikroTest Magnetic coating thickness measurement standards for checking the accuracy
Application
The MikroTest has been the most widely used coating thickness gauge in the world over the last 40 years. International patents and our production “know-how” ensure that the gauge has the highest technical standards of all analogue magnetic coating thickness gauges. All instruments conform to national and international standards: DIN EN ISO 2178, DIN 50 982, ASTM B 499, E 376, D 1186, G 12, B 530, BS 5411, ISO 2361
· Horizontal, vertical, overhead
· The gauge allows measurements on curved surfaces
· Precise measurements in tubes and on round parts due to the automatic operation
Measuring principle
The measurement of the coating thickness is based on magnetic attraction. The attractive force is related to the distance between a permanent magnet and a steel substrate. This distance represents the thickness of the coating to be measured. The magnet is lifted from the surface by means of a spring connected to the magnet arm. The force needed to lift the magnet is directly related to the angle of rotation of the torsion spring. This measuring principle is also especially suited for electroplated nickel on copper, aluminium and other non-ferrous metals.

MiniTest Model 4100 – 3100 – 2100 – 1100, Elektrophysik (Germany)
Application
The MiniTest gauges are small universal gauges designed for non-destructive coating thickness measurement. For many years, automotive, shipbuilding, aircraft and machine manufacturers as well as government departments, inspectors, consultants and the paint and electroplating industry have used ElektroPhysik coating thickness gauges. Well-known automotive producers and leading manufacturers of nearly all branches of industry entrust ElektroPhysik gauges with their quality assurance.
Description
The MiniTest 4100 – 1100 series comprises four different basic gauges, thus offering different possibilities of processing of measuring values. Different probes are available which can be connected to all basic gauges. In order to select the “right” probe, the thickness of the coating to be measured as well as that of the substrate and the geometry have to be taken into consideration. ElektroPhysik offers a range of probes suitable for standard as well as for special applications. For measurements on steel, the magnetic induction principle is used allowing measurement of all insulating coatings, e.g. paint, enamel etc., and non-ferrous metals on steel and ferrous metals. Probes working on the magnetic induction principle are referred to as F-probes. For measurements of insulating coatings on non-ferrous metals, the eddy current principle is used. Probes working on this principle are referred to as N-probes.
MiniTest 4100
MiniTest 4100 offers unique possibilities of data processing. In total, 10,000 measuring values can be stored in max. 99 application memories each with max. 98 batches. Application memories are extremely useful when different measuring
tasks requiring different calibrations or probes occur regularly. The selected memory stores the calibration carried out and the probe used. Once MiniTest 4100 is prepared for various measuring tasks, taking a series of readings becomes simple and quick. Permanent calibration can be dispensed with and measuring errors are abolished. For quality assessment, the stored measuring series can be evaluated according to the various statistics modes. Setting limit values allows the user to take readings and at the same time monitor the tolerances specified for the production process. Acoustic signals indicate that a preset limit value was exceeded.
MiniTest 3100
MiniTest 3100 also possesses a total memory capacity of 10,000 readings and the possibility to store readings in 10 application memories with 10 batches each. A calibration once performed remains in the application memory. Statistical evaluation of a measuring series allows the user to assess the coating with mean value, max., min., standard deviation and number of readings taken within one measuring series.
MiniTest 2100
This gauge version also possesses a total memory capacity of 10,000 readings. A complete measuring series can be statistically evaluated. MiniTest 2100 is suitable for users with repeated applications, e. g. electroplated coatings on small objects.
Switching off the gauge does not delete calibrations from the memory.
MiniTest 1100
This gauge is the basic version of the MiniTest 4100 series. Its functions are simple and clearly arranged. However, this low-cost version also works with all probes of the ElektroPhysik range. Thus, special applications, e.g. very thick coatings, can be measured at a reasonable price. MiniTest 1100 does not offer either a memory or statistics

GalvanoTest Versatile Coating Thickness Gauge, Make : Elektrophysik - Germany
• measures almost any electroplated coating/base combination
• suitable for single and multi-layer coatings
• utilizes the coulometric principle, a de-plating method conforming to DIN 50 955 and ISO 2177
Also suitable for extremely thin coatings from 0.05 microns!
Application
The coulometric or anodic de-plating technique is used for measuring the thickness of electroplated coatings on virtually all substrates such as steel, non-ferrous metals or insulating material bases. Typical applications include: nickel on steel, zinc on steel, tin on copper, silver on copper or copper on epoxy. This technique simply involves the removal of a small, barely visible area of coating material. The substrate is not affected. The coulometric method ensures reliable and exact results. Designed for complete ease of use, GalvanoTest requires no specific operator skills and only minimal training before actual measurements can take place. The coulometric principle is the only low-cost method to measure the individual layers of multi-layer systems, for instance chrome plus nickel plus copper on steel one after the other. Connected to the MiniPrint data printer, GalvanoTest provides complete documentation of measuring results and statistics. For specific measuring analysis or later reference, the characteristic voltage curve during the de-plating process can also be printed out
Measuring principle Based on the principle of Faraday’s law, GalvanoTest performs the electrolytic dissolution of a precisely delimited area of the sample. A measuring cell is filled with an electrolyte specially adapted to the selected coating/base combination. The measuring cell is placed on the test sample. A gasket inserted between the cell and the test sample prevents the solution from running out and at the same time precisely determines the area to be de-plated, e.g. 1 mm. The equipment is now ready to use and can be plugged into the electronic gauge. The current, through the electrolyte, dissolves the predetermined area of coating using an electro-chemical reaction. Once the etching is complete, a characteristic change in voltage automatically stops the deplating process and coating thickness is displayed in microns or mils on the digital display.
Description The GalvanoTest gauge consists of three major components:
1. Measuring cell For measuring on even or curved surfaces up to 3 mm curvature radius, two different measuring cells are available. A measuring cell with circulating pump is connected to GalvanoTest 3000, a cell with air pulsator is con - nected to the 2000 model. The electrolyte is constantly moved around the measuring cell to ensure an even de-plating of the measuring area as well as on optimum use of the electrolyte. For measuring wires or small parts, an electrolyte cup is available to dip the samples into the electrolyte. The electrolyte cup can be used for both models and is available as an option.
2. Stand The stand serves to hold the test sample in place. It permits the exact positioning of the measuring cell on the test sample.
3. Processing unit GalvanoTest is a microprocessor based instrument with interactive LCD. It is suitable for measuring a variety of plating applications. The measuring application can be entered via touch-pad and visualized on a large alpha - numeric display. Various data ports are available to connect GalvanoTest to peripheral units MiniPrint – data printer for immediate print-out of readings, statistics and measuring cell voltage curve Electrolyte cup for measuring wires and small parts such as a PC, printer or Y-T recorder. For data transfer, an MSoft 7000 Basic Edition software is available as an option
